One of A Kind Christmas Show - News

Just to update. I made the very sad and hard choice to give up my booth for the Christmas One Of A Kind Show. I had some health issues that put me behind to the point of panic and i decided it's be much better to have a great booth at the spring show than a mediocre booth for Xmas. I pride myself on doing interesting and non mass produced stuff and it wouldn't have done the show nor my clients any good to show up with product that I'd thrown together. I decided it'd be best if i gave my body a wee rest from the stress of show production mode and have been focused on preparing for spring and doing commissions. So, i hope to see you all in April where i will have new and exciting products. I'm still available for commissions as usual and I may do a one day studio sale in mid December if i find there are stuff that makes sense for Xmas. Check my website and here for details in the next week or two.

There are lots of great folks at the OOAK show! Check out Floyd Elzinga. He does beautiful and fantastic metalwork. Also Yasmine Louis Textile Printing has terrific clothes and pillows, I use Honey Pie herbals "Working Hands" soap every day at the shop. Best gentle hand cleaner i've tried. And of course, that crazy good chocolate bark stuff!!
Buy Tickets here. it's $2 cheaper than at the door i think.

RIP Nancy Spero

Nancy Spero passed away this weekend. She was an amazing activist and artist. When I was young and seeking out women artists as role models, looking at her work around the representation of women was a huge deal for my young self.

BioDiesel envy

I've been on a big cleaning kick in the studio which has been good and bad. Good because i've been using recycled everything for new pieces instead of throwing out stuff that can have another life. Bad because i had another Buddhist cleaning/guilt bing a few months ago and threw out a lot of stuff i could have used. So lesson learned. Purge but also store and organize to be used later. I had a few of the new pieces at the Queen West Art Crawl a few weekends back but i'll find a photo to post as well.
I'm hoping one day the Lucky 7 Steel truck can grow into being a Bio diesel. There's a Bio Diesel gas station on Queen st East now in Toronto so it's more possible.
In the meantime, i read and research.

Sustainable design

Or...Design for the Other 90%.

Awhile back i saw Paul Polak speak about his book "Out of Poverty" at OCAD and became very interested in the idea of designing stuff that actually allows people to help themselves instead of the short term, expensive and non sustainable design.
Some of the designs his team made cost only a few dollars and help people to get their farms going and take care of their families without relying on the government or anyone else for help.
have a look at some of these great ideas by checking out the links below:

Post Queen West Art Crawl

Just wanted to say thank to everyone that stopped by my booth this weekend! It was a great weekend (who could ask for better weather!) and i got lots of great feedback from new and old clients and friends. I'm recovering from the move out today (ouch!) but will be back in the studio tomorrow sorting out all my commission requests before i start with my One of A Kind Christmas Show thinking next week. Can't believe how soon it is coming up!

One day before show

Well, the studio looks like a bomb went off, there is product occupying every available space and i'm too tired to make anything else!
Tomorrow we pack everything up and figure out how to take it down again and bring it all back the next day!
Curious to see how people respond to the new stuff. I think the direction of the work will change a lot for the Xmas One of A Kind.
For tonight it's laundry and Law and Order!
